Cold Chisel will be inducted into the South Australian Music Hall Of Fame at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide this weekend.
Cold Chisel members Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Phil Small and Don Walker will be presented with the honour at the Starters Grid on Pit Straight before the start of the race this Sunday (March 1, 2015).
“It’s been a long time since we started making a racket in Elizabeth”, says Cold Chisel frontman, Jimmy Barnes. “In those days it was a pretty rough place but that hardness helped give us our edge. Cold Chisel sound like we sound because we came from a particular part of Adelaide at a particular moment in time.”
A posthumous award will be presented to the late Steve Prestwich, the Cold Chisel drummer who passed away on 16 January 2011. Steve’s brother Tim Prestwich will accept the award on his behalf.
The commemorative medals will be presented to the band members by South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill.
Cold Chisel formed in 1973 and settled on their name by 1974. Bass player Phil Small joined in 1975, replacing Les Kaczmarek, who left to pursue his studies.
Cold Chisel’s first album ‘Cold Chisel’ was released in April 1978. While it went relatively unnoticed in its day the song ‘Khe Sahn’ grew over time to become a Cold Chisel classic.
Cold Chisel spilt in 1984, electing to go out on top. They have since reunited to record two more albums ‘The Last Wave of Summer’ in 1998 and ‘No Plans’ in 2012. Chisel are currently working on another album but there is no time frame on its release.
