Coldplay ‘Ghost Stories’ is the number one album in Australia again this week.

For only the second time, a Coldplay album has managed to spend a second week at No.1, as this week “Ghost Stories” retains its lead on the ARIA Albums Chart, plus it picks up a ▲Platinum certification, the only new cert for the week too.

Only June 2008’s “Viva La Vida” spent its first four weeks at the top, all of their other No.1 albums have spent a single week at the top, until now. This now gives the band a ninth accumulated week at No.1, the same amount of weeks previously notched up by Pearl Jam (from 8 #1 albums), Powderfinger (from 5), Avril Lavigne and Olivia Newton-John (from 3 #1 albums) and finally Lionel Richie (from 2).

The highest new entry comes in at No.2, the debut album for Sam Smith entitled “In the Lonely Hour”, which features the current Top 10 single “Stay With Me” (TW-9), and former entry “Money on My Mind” (HP-51, early May 2014). The ‘Frozen’ Soundtrack spends a twentieth week within the Top 10 by staying at No.3 and dropping down two places to No.4 is Michael Jackson with “Xscape”.

The other Top 10 debut is new at No.5, Mariah Carey’s twelfth studio album (14th if you want to include the two Xmas albums) “Me, I am Mariah… the Elusive Chanteuse”, and is her first new material in almost five years, as she last charted in October 2009 with “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” (HP-6). By debuting in the Top 10 the album also becomes her thirteenth Top 10 appearance and her first Top 5 placing in over six years, as she debuted and peaked at No.2 in late April 2008 with “E=MC2”, with her last two Top 10 albums only staying within the ten for a single week, so we will have to see next week whether it can retain its top ten status for longer.

“Turn Blue” for The Black Keys is down a couple of places to No.6 and jumping back up five places to No.7 is Iggy Azalea’s “The New Classic” album helped by her new peak over on the singles chart with “Fancy” (TW-6). INXS are back up a place to No.8 with their compilation “The Very Best” and The Arctic Monkeys are back up two spots to No.9 with “AM”, whilst the leap last week for ZHU to No.6 with his “The NightDay” EP is down four to No.10 this week.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Russell Morris is back up nine places to No.15 with his new album “Van Diemen’s Land” and due to his new albums continued high flying success, “The Essential” collection for Michael Jackson is back up twelve to No.25. Violent Soho is back up to No.26 with “Hungry Ghost” and Troy and Adam’s “Great Country Songbook” leaps back up forty-seven spots to No.36. Asgier with “In the Silence” is back within the Top 50 at No.42 as too The Eagles with their set “The Very Best of” to No.50.

DOWN DOWN: After four more weeks back within the Top 10, taking its tally to eleven weeks within the ten, “To Be Loved” for Michael Buble is down six to No.11, whilst another former No.1, “Built on Glass” for Chet Faker is down five to No.12 after six weeks within the ten. After leaping back into the ten last week at No.8, “Atlas” by Rufus is back down eight places to No.16 and another returnee last week, “Sheezus” for Lily Allen is also down eight to No.18 this week. The Jason DeRulo album “Tattoos” falls nine to No.24 and down ten to No.28 are The Thundamentals with “So We Can Remember”, whilst Boy & Bear drop back down sixteen to No.29 with “Harlequin Dream”, one place lower Illy is down nine to No.30 with “Cinematic”. Cliff Richard is down eleven to No.33 with his “Fabulous Rock ‘N’ Roll Songbook” and Rudimental drop fourteen to No.37 with “Home”. Harrison Craig tumbles thirteen to No.45 with his “L.O.V.E.” album whilst Jessica Mauboy falls twenty places to No.47 with “Beautiful” with the self-titled album for Sol3 Mio down seventeen to No.48. Further tumbles down the charts come from Bastille (36 to 52), Bliss N’ Eso (38 to 55), Rascal Flatts (17 to 56), Andre Rieu (47 to 62), The Angels (44 to 63), Coldplay’s “Mylo Xyloto” (45 to 65), Eminem (48 to 67), Johnny Cash (46 to 71), In Hearts Wake (43 to 79), Mark Vincent (42 to 84), Ricky Martin (40 to 90), Sarah McLachlan (49 to 93) and leaving from last weeks Top 50 are the “Eurovision 2014” (#39) compilation and Chromeo (#50).

The fifth studio album for Royksopp is a teaming with Robyn entitled “Do it Again” and by debuting at No.14 is the highest charting album for the Norwegian duo and fourth to chart in Australia, the previous best effort was from their third album “Junior” (HP-28, March 2009). The other Top 20 debut this week is the soundtrack to the new film “The Fault in Our Stars” which is new at No.19 and features tracks from Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg, GroupLove, Birdy and Kodaline amongst its many tracks.

The second album for Cher Lloyd entitled “Sorry I’m Late” comes in at No.23 surpassing the No.30 peak of her debut set “Sticks + Stones” (Oct 2012). New at No.31 is “Kiss 40” for rock-gods Kiss, the album features one track from the entire bands albums’ during their forty year career, including the solo albums, live recordings and soundtracks they’ve issued.

The third album for local singer/songwriter Kim Churchill becomes his first chart entry as “Silence/Win” debuts at No.32, which features the current charting single “Window to the Sky” (TW-90). A few places lower at No.34 are The Roots with their sixth albums chart entry in Australia, “…and then you Shoot your Cousin”, which becomes the bands highest charting album here, beating the No.40 peak of their last chart appearance, “Wise Up Ghost” (Sept 2013) a collaboration with Elvis Costello.

There are three more Top 50 entries, with The Ten Tenors coming in at No.44 with “On Broadway, Volume 1”, which is the ensemble’s sixth ARIA Albums Chart appearance and first since “Double Platinum” (HP-17, August 2011). The 35th studio album for Neil Young is entitled “A Letter Home” which is new at No.46 and is an album of covers from such acts as Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen and The Everly Brothers. The final fifty entry is at No.49, the debut album for Afrojack entitled “Forget the World” which features the recent No.57 single “Ten Feet Tall”.

Lower 50: Russell Morris also rises with his former Top 10 album “Sharkmouth” this week, back up twenty-three places to No.51 and following his visit to our shores James Vincent McMorrow is back in at No.54 with his second and current album “Post Tropical” (HP-25, Jan 2014). “Moon Landing” for James Blunt is back up eleven places to No.59 and with a new single debuting in the Top 30 from the album plus a tour for 2015 announced, One Direction’s “Midnight Memories” is back up thirty-five places to No.64. Adele’s “21” is back up fifteen spots to No.66 and re-entries within the lower fifty come from Emeli Sande with “Our Version of Events” at No.85 (thanks to ‘Clown’ charting this week), Rodriguez with “Cold Facts” at No.92, “Born to Die – The Paradise Edition” for Lana Del Rey at No.98 and “The Story So Far” for June tourist Keith Urban at No.99.

The tenth studio album for Blondie debuts at No.72 entitled “Ghosts of Download” which features a bonus disc of eleven of their older songs (10 re-recorded) which is entitled “Blondie 4(0)-Ever: Greatest Hits Deluxe Redux”. A few places lower at No.74 is the debut album for US pop star Austin Mahone entitled “The Secret”, and also landing his first chart entry (although from his third studio album) is US country artist Brantley Gilbert who enters at No.87 with “Just As I Am” which is a recent No.2 album in the USA.
