After two decades in Melbourne, the Community Cup has decided to expand into New South Wales, with a game set to take place in Sydney in March.
On Sunday, March 18, 2012 the Sydney Sailors (who have taken on the colours of the RRR/PBS Megahertz) will battle it out with the Western Walers (who will be flying the colours of the Espy Rockdogs).
The Sydney Sailors will be made up of music industry personnel and will be captained by Adam Spencer while the Western Walers will be under the guidance of musician Dan Sultan, who was captain of the Espy Rockdogs last year.
Each year there is a different theme. Last year’s Cup in Melbourne was the Nick Cave themed Do You Love Me? and previous themes have included Devo, The Ramones and The Clash. This year it will be Smells Like Team Spirit – a Nirvana theme.
The final teams are yet to be announced, as with the bands that will perform on the day.
The Cup has raised money for Melbourne’s disadvantaged and last year raised over $120,000 with 12,000 punters in attendance.
The Cup has been raising money for Reclink in recent years and that will continue to be the case in Sydney. Reclink invests in Australia’s disadvantaged by encouraging participation in sports.
The cup will take place at:
Henson Park, Marrickville
Sydways Map 73 G14
Gates open at 12 noon.
Match commences at 2pm.
$10 Entry
For Melbourne Community Cup fans:
The cup is not leaving Melbourne for Sydney! It will return to Elsternwick Park, Melbourne on Sunday June 24, 2012, so chill, okay?
