The 9th Coopers AMP has trimmed its list down to the nine albums eligible for the 2014 Australian Music Prize.
The final nine were announced at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl by hosts Ella Hooper and Tim Levinson aka Urthboy.
The Coopers AMP recognises the art in music as opposed to the sales and popularity criteria in other music awards. It also focuses on albums only as a body of work.
“Nine years on and I still don’t know how the judges pull it off,” founder and prize director Scott B. Murphy said. “Selecting nine great albums from over 300 that they listen to. Yet again our shortlist shows what amazing Australian talent is out there and that the world needs to hear it. The ninth shortlist is particularly impressive as it contains two artists who have had earlier albums shortlisted.
The revealing of the nine artists at the event in Melbourne included a performance by four of the shortlisted acts. Beaches, Jen Cloher, Dialectrix and Kirin J. Callinan performed. Callinan is already being talked up as a buzz act for SXSW this year.
