Courtney Barnett has released a limited edition vinyl of a rare Canadian find, Elyse Weinberg’s ‘Houses’.
Elyse was a potential star after building a reputation out of Toronto in the late 60s. In 1969 she released her first album ‘Elyse’’.
Elyse Weinberg was discovered and mentored by Mama Cass and recorded her debut album for Bill Cosby’s one-time record label Tetragrammaton. It took Elyse 40 years to release her second album ‘In My Own Sweet Time’ in 2009 although she did record an album ‘Greasepaint Smile’ in 1972, which was released in 2015). That album featured ‘Houses’ with Neil Young on guitar.
In a statement Courtney Barnett said,
Recently I found myself on tour with a night off. My friend Janet invited me to her house for a home-cooked meal where we ate beautiful food, shared stories, and played with Mac the old dog. Late in the evening Janet pulled out a record titled ‘Elyse’. The artwork reminded me of Joni Mitchell’s Ladies Of the Canyon. I fell in love with this mysterious artist and in particular the song ‘Houses’. Rumour has it Neil Young is playing the lead guitar line. I flipped the record over but couldn’t find his name in the credits. Elyse Weinberg once said of her life in music “the plan is to remember who i really am”. I liked that.
I recorded a cover of ‘Houses’ a couple of months ago at Spotify’s Studios in NYC .
Courtney’s version of ‘Houses’ is out as a limited edition vinyl release.
Courtney Barnett will spend the remainder of 2018 on tour.
