Hole are once again whole. The classic ‘Celebrity Skin’ line-up featuring Courtney Love, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Eric Erlandson and Patty Schemel are back together.
Courtney Love has confirmed their reformation with The Quietus and that the band has already performed a few secret warm-up shows last week before heading to the UK in May for dates with the line-up.
“I started playing with Patty and Melissa and Eric, just to see how that was,” Love told The Quietus. “We already played like three or four times in the last week.” Love is planning to release a new single, ‘Wedding Day’, in support of her upcoming May tour of the UK.
‘Celebrity Skin’ was Hole’s most successful album selling 1.4 million in the USA and achieving Platinum (70,000) in Australia. This ‘Celebrity Skin’ Hole line-up has not played live together since 1998 and there are questions as to whether Patty Schemel even played on the album. Schemel is credited as drummer on the record but was fired from the band during the sessions and replaced with Journey’s Deen Castronovo.
The original Hole line-up in 1989 was Courtney Love and Eric Erlandson with Caroline Rue and Lisa Roberts. Bass player Roberts left in 1990 and was replaced by Jill Emery, who plays on Hole’s debut album ‘Pretty On The Inside’. She left in 1992 to join Mazzy Star and was replaced with Leslie Hardy who left a year later to be replaced by Kristen Pfaff, who does play on the second album ‘Live Through This’ but then died in 1994. She was replaced by Melissa Auf der Maur.
Original drummer Caroline Rue left in 1992 after playing on ‘Pretty On The Inside’. She was replaced by Patty Schemel who played on ‘Lived Through This’ (1994) and is credited as playing on ‘Celebrity Skin’ (1998) even through she didn’t.
Confused? Well, when Hole reformed in 2009 and released a fourth album ‘Nobody’s Daughter’, Courtney Love was the only former member of the band.
Hole have been recording and will release a new song ‘Wedding Day’ before their UK tour.
