Cyndi Lauper is going to take another crack at the Great White Way, writing the score for an adaptation of the 1988 film Working Girl.
Her first Broadway musical, Kinky Boots, opened on April 4, 2013 and is still playing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre where it has amassed 1,738 performances to date. The show won the Tony for Best Musical and Lauper won for Best Original Score Written For the Theatre.
This time around, the source material is Mike Nichols’ film that starred Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Alec Baldwin and Joan Cusack. The film won an Oscar for Best Original Song for Carly Simon’s Let the River Run.
It’s not known if Simon or her song will be involved in the new production. Lauper will once again write both the lyrics and music.
Cyndi said of the show “I love the film, and its story about a woman’s very unconventional road to success in the ’80s is something I know a lot about. Women are still fighting for fundamental rights and equal pay!”
Working Girl will actually be the third show for Lauper on Broadway although number two, SpongeBob SquarePants, which opens December 4 at the Palace Theatre, will only contain one or two of her songs as the show has original songs by David Bowie, Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I.
