The Outer Critics Circle Awards, one of a number of Broadway and Off-Broadway honours that are announced in May and June every year, have given their Best Musicals awards to Cyndi Lauper’s Kinky Boots and David Byrne’s Here Lies Love. Lauper’s award is for a Broadway musical while Byrne’s is for an Off-Broadway show.
Lauper also won for Best Score, an award that was considered close between Kinky Boots and Matilda.
Kinky Boots leads the nominees for the Tony Awards, which will be given out on Sunday, June 9. Here Lies Love is not eligible for the Tonys as they only cover shows playing on Broadway.
In total, Kinky Boots won three awards, Best New Broadway Musical, Outstanding New Score and Actor in a Musical (Billy Porter).
The revival of Pippin was the big winner for the night, taking home seven awards.
