Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz) will release his Dr Dee concept album in May.
Dr Dee is an 18-song concept album from an opera that he worked on Rufus Norris, which was inspired by John Dee who was an mathematician, astronomer, alchemist, and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I.
The music combines Albarn’s vocals, early England choral and orchestral arrangements, Renaissance sounds, as well as modern, and West African music. Albarn himself has called it “strange pastoral folk”.
It was recorded in Albarn’s West London and in Salford with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and mixed in Reykjavik, Iceland, by Valgeir Sigursson.
Dr Dee will be out on May 4 through Parlophone Records. Check out a clip of Albarn discussing the project with some footage from the sessions and some music below.
