D’Angelo and the Vanguard played the Best Buy Theater in New York on Wednesday night, highlighting his surprise album, Black Messiah.
Black Messiah was D’Angelo’s first studio album in 15 years and only the third of his twenty year recording career, giving him a limited amount of material from which to choose.
The singer performed eight songs from the album, splitting the balance of his show between two songs from his 1995 debut, Brown Sugar, five from the 2000 followup Voodoo and one cover.
