Darlene Love Reflects Her Final Letterman Appearance

With David Letterman readying to retire from late night television, a number of traditions he established over the years are also about to go away.

One of those is Darlene Love’s performance of Christmas, Baby Please Come Home, a song she has sung on his show in the week leading up to Christmas every year since 1986 except for 2007 with the Writers Guild was on strike.

Love has said, via her Facebook account, that she is getting “emotional” thinking about the final performance.

My final performance on The Late Show with David Letterman will air on Friday December 19th. I get emotional just typing this. It’s gonna be a very rough day for me, Paul and everyone else involved in producing my segment for the past 28 years. #literallyintears, #EndofAwonderfulEra

The first performance came in 1986 when Letterman was still doing his NBC show Late Night With David Letterman. It became a yearly tradition, even when he transferred his show to CBS in 1993.

The song is done every year with Paul Shaffer and Lettermen’s house group, The World’s Most Dangerous Band. Depending on the year, the song has been supplemented with strings and/or a chorus.
