The BBC has jumped into the awards show pool with their new ceremony to be held on Thursday night at Earl’s Court in London.
The majority of categories are public voted; however, two of the awards are selected by a panel of judges. On Monday, the BBC announced the nominees in the categories:
British Artist of the Year
David Bowie
Ed Sheeran
Elbow
Jungle
Royal Blood
Sam Smith
International Artist of the Year
Dolly Parton
Gregory Porter
Lorde
Pharrell
Prince
Taylor Swift
The nominations for veteran artists Dolly Parton and Prince are not a surprise as Parton was the toast of this year’s Glastonbury Festival and Prince played a number of high-profile small club shows over the past year in London.
A bit more surprising is the nomination for David Bowie who, except for one new track on his career retrospecting, Nothing Has Change, has been relatively quiet. Especially compared to the others in the category who have been very active with both albums and touring.
Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton will host the show which will be broadcast on BBC One, Radio 1, Radio 2 and bbc.co.uk/music. Scheduled to perform are One Direction, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Clean Bandit, Paloma Faith, Calvin Harris, Ella Henderson with Labrinth, Take That, George Ezra, BBC Introducing’s Catfish and the Bottlemen and the BBC Concert Orchestra with a few surprise appearances and collaborations to be unveiled on the night.
