If you thought that subtle vocal at the start of Deep Purple’s ‘Stormbringer’ sounded a bit like Linda Blair’s demonic dialogue in The Exorcist then you would be right.
Whitesnake (and former Deep Purple Mk III and IV) has confirmed for Noise11 that you are indeed hearing a bit of a nod to the classic horror flick at the start of the song.
“What happened, it is a very dark aspect of my voice,” David Coverdale tells Noise11.com. “I was doing like, a howling wolf. Martin Birch said, ‘wow, that sounds amazing’ and I said ‘I can’t use those words’. So we snipped the tape and made it in reverse. But, of course, cock is cock in reverse so we had to add some echo on that one. So that was the reason for it”.
The words were from The Exorcist scene when Regan/the Demon is confronted by Father Merrin. Coverdale kept the effect when he re-recorded the song for Whitesnake’s 2015 ‘The Purple Album’.
In 2020 Australia will be treated to Whitesnake live for the first time in 12 years.
