Demi Lovato has deleted her Twitter account after facing backlash for a tweet about rapper 21 Savage.
The 26-year-old singer took to the social media platform on Sunday night, when the majority of people were commenting about the 2019 Super Bowl, and wrote: “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.”
Her tweet was in reference to the news that the Bank Account hitmaker, real name Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, has been arrested by U.S. immigration officials amid allegations suggesting he is actually a Brit who overstayed his visa.
However, many people didn’t find her remark funny, including Migos star Offset, who seemed to be referencing Demi as he wrote on Twitter: “ALL THE MEMES AND SHIT AINT FUNNY WHEN SOMEBODY GOING THROUGH SOME. PRAYING FOR MY DAWG AINT SHIT FUNNY HIS FANILY (sic) DEPENDING ON HIM.”
Demi then returned to Twitter to clarify what she had found so amusing, sharing a meme which showed someone writing on paper with a feather-tipped pen, alongside the caption “This how 21 Savage be writing his verses.”
“FYI this is the s**t I’m laughing at…not the fact that anyone is getting deported,” Demi explained. She added that she was fed up at much of the backlash focussing on her near-fatal drug overdose last July (18), writing: “If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with some original not involving drugs.”
Her reasoning did little to calm her angry critics, however, and Demi later tweeted: “Fuck Twitter. This is why I don’t tweet anymore.”
She later took to her Instagram Stories to explain her decision to deactivate her Twitter account, sharing screenshots of some of the nasty remarks she had received poking fun at her overdose and issues with drugs.
“Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke…not have I EVER laughed at that,” she wrote. “The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone… But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction, let alone their OD.”
