Mark Lizotte (aka Diesel) has had one of his biggest touring years in 2019 and it all started with Red Hot Summer in January.

Diesel was on the Red Hot Summer bill Jimmy Barnes, Joan Jett and The Living End. “I started the year with the outdoor shows for Red Hot Summer. That was a nice way to get into the year,” Diesel tells Noise11.com. “It definitely felt like summer, you are touring, windows down. It was great being on a bill with Joan Jett and The Living End and Jimmy. There was so much great rock music to be had”.

After launching himself 30 years ago this year in Australian pubs with Johnny Diesel and the Injectors, Mark is comfortable now with the daytime gig. “I really like the energy of the daytime,” he says. “When you are 15 you think that playing at 2 in the morning is kind of romantic. There can be something fun about that. The older I get the more I notice there is such a thing as ‘pumpkin time’, when people turn into pumpkins. It’s not a criticism. People work, it gets to that time of the day and they are tired. I like playing to fresh people outdoors, where for starters there is oxygen, it’s in the sun, there is a cool breeze blowing. That’s heaven. I can’t be any happier than at that point on stage. I remember one of the shows, Launceston, it was the ideal gig. It wasn’t too hot, people were going nuts in the middle of the day, I have that daytime energy, I am ready to kill in the afternoon. It was the best gig. It was great”.

Red Hot Summer 2019 was the first time Mark got to tour with Joan Jett. “She is such a beautiful humble person,” he says. “Meeting her and the band, they were all really sweet. She has been doing that for so long I have so much respect for that. She is a total maverick, a female in a male dominated industry. Long before there were any role models she stepped up and became that. I have a lot of respect for her”.

2019 touring has not ended for Mark. He still has over 30 shows to go.

Red Hot Summer dates are expected to be announced soon. Meanwhile, tickets for Duane McDonald’s first baby One Electric Day are on sale now.
