Patrisha McLean, the wife of singer Don McLean for the past thirty years, has filed for divorce in the wake of a January domestic violence arrest.
McLean, 70, was arrested after his wife alerted authorities to her being held captive for four hours. At the time of the incident, she stated that she would be filing for divorce and sought an order of protection, detailing a pattern of abuse that went back to the beginning of their relationship. She also stated that she felt, if she hadn’t been able to call the police, that she would have been killed.
Today, Patrisha filed legal papers claiming “adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences”. Her lawyer, Gene Libby, released a statement saying that, over time, she had gained “strength and insight away from his influence and control.”
Last week, a scheduled concert by McLean at a Barnstable High School on Cape Cod was cancelled after students from the school protested the appearance, citing the recent arrest. In a letter to the district’s superintendent, the group stated that McLean was a “bad role model”.
