Donald Trump failed to get that Billy Joel wasn’t complimenting him when he dedicated his song ‘The Entertainer’ to the failed reality star wanna be President of the USA.
Today I am your champion
I may have won your hearts
But I know the game, you’ll forget my name
And I won’t be here in another year
If I don’t stay on the charts
– Billy Joel’s The Entertainer
Billy Joel wrote The Entertainer, a song about a jaded musician, in the early 70’s and released it as his only single from the 1974 album Streetlife Serenade.
On Friday, he used the song a bit differently at his monthly Madison Square Garden show, dedicating it to presumed GOP nominee Donald Trump, saying The Donald had been keeping him entertained for a number of months.
While, on the surface, it might seem to be a sideways compliment, there must have been some fairly serious inflection in his voice because fans at the show began tweeting right away that he was taking a jab at Trump.
Trump’s reaction?
Thank you @BillyJoel– many friends just told me you gave a very kind shoutout at MSG. Appreciate it- love your music!

Joel did try to smooth things over a bit, telling Time “I’m in the entertainment business. Donald Trump’s campaign has been very entertaining. Aside from that, who cares about the political opinions of a piano player?”
