Car enthusiast and AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson is about to become a doctor.

Northumbria University in England will honor the singer next week with a doctorate in a salute to his contributions to music.

Brian Johnson, who was born down the river at Dunston, is the lead vocalist for AC/DC, one of the world’s most successful rock bands. They have sold an estimated 150 million albums world-wide and their most recent tour, Black Ice, is claimed to be the third highest-grossing tour of all time. He will receive his honorary degree alongside students graduating from Engineering and Environment degree programmes on Wednesday (9 July).

Specifically, according to the University’s website, “The recipients of honorary degrees are nominated by the University’s staff for their achievements, their links to the University – and for their sheer inspirational qualities.”

Johnson joined AC/DC in 1980 after the death of Bon Scott. He has been the lead vocalist on such classic albums as Back in Black, For Those About to Rock We Salute You and Black Ice.

Also receiving honorary degrees are Vera Bard QC (barrister) and Baroness Howells of St Davids, OBE (campaigner for racial equality).
