Dr. Dre got goosebumps watching biopic Straight Outta Compton.
The legendary rapper and music producer began his career in hip hop group N.W.A. back in the 80s along with Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella. The band’s time together is chronicled in new movie Straight Outta Compton and despite helping produce the film, the final cut still made a big impression on the 50-year-old.
“It was goosebumps – a little bit surreal,” he told Entertainment Tonight at Tuesday’s premiere. “Some guys that came from nothing that created something that’s just amazing.”
The Compton neighbourhood in California is one of the toughest places in America to live, and the movie documents the bands rise to success from their humble beginnings. The film is even more special for Ice Cube as his son O’Shea Jackson Jr. plays the younger version of him in the biopic.
“He got everything right,” the 46-year-old told the outlet proudly. “When we was editing this movie, at certain points I was thinking we was looking at the young N.W.A.”
O’Shea is joined by actor Corey Hawkins in the movie, playing Dr. Dre. The 26-year-old is thrilled at the positive reviews the film is already garnering but when Oprah Winfrey tweeted her support of the production, his excitement went into overdrive.
“When we saw that everybody started texting each other,” he said. “Everybody was sending the picture around and everybody was flipping out, man. It’s crazy.”
The Butler actress and legendary chat show host had taken to Twitter after seeing the movie to encourage her fans to see it. “Powerful! Powerful! (sic)” she wrote.
