Yothu Yindi will return to live performance with an appearance with East Journey at the National Indigenous Music Awards in Darwin in July.
East Journey featuring Yothu Yindi have collaborated in The Genesis Project and will feature the project in a one-hour performances for the NIMAs. The performance will be the live premiere of The Genesis Project.
The Genesis Project is the first musical activity for Yothu Yindi since the death of Dr M Yunupingu in June 2013.
“…we had all been worrying who was going to keep the vision of Yothu Yindi going; and East Journey are keeping it alive for the old man [the late Dr M Yunupingu], for Yothu Yindi and for our families. Each generation needs to take responsibility to mentor the next generation, and that’s what we [Yothu Yindi] have done with East Journey to continue this important legacy; and we hope that East Journey will do it with the next generation coming up behind them, says Witiyana Marika co-Founder and original member of Yothu Yindi.
The NIMAs has grown significantly over the past 4 years. It is now recognised nationally by the music industry and by the Indigenous community as ‘the’ awards for Indigenous musicians in Australia. Since their evolution from an NT based awards in 2012 into that of a national one, it has continued to grow and solidify its place in recognising achievement and excellence in the Indigenous music sector. MusicNT is proud again to host this year’s event and we look forward to celebrating the music and achievements of Indigenous musicians from across the country”, says Mark Smith the Executive Director of MusicNT & NIMAs.”
National Indigenous Music Awards Ceremony & Concert will be held at Darwin Amphitheatre on Sat. 25th July.
