Ed Sheeran is Breaking Up with his Loop Pedal

Ed Sheeran hinted he wants to ditch his famous guitar “loop pedal” and go in a different musical direction on the closing night of his world tour.

Sheeran is famous for performing solo on stage, using an effects pedals to record his guitar lines and then play them back on loop as he plays a different melody over the top.

Ed has stuck with the technique for countless shows, including his 2017 Glastonbury headlining gig and his ÷ (Divide) tour, but, according to the BBC, on the closing night of his trek in Ipswich, England, on Monday, he told fans: “This might be the last loop pedal gig”.

Back in 2014, the musician revealed that he wanted to perform with a backing band after watching a Justin Timberlake gig.

“In my head I’ve always seen the third record as where I get a band,” he told British newspaper The Sun. However, he decided to stick with his trusty effects pedals to tour Divide, a trek that has smashed numerous records.

The 28-year-old has played to 7.5 million people on the tour and raised revenues of more than $817 million (£666 million) – making it the most-attended and highest-grossing trek of all time.

Ed Sheeran closed four gigs in Ipswich’s Chantry Park, near to the Suffolk town of Framlingham, where he grew up. He still lives nearby on a sprawling country estate.

Ed paid tribute to his roots during the four concerts, donning a specially made ‘Divide’ Ipswich Town soccer shirt for the first three nights, and wearing a Framlingham Town kit for his final gig. Saying farewell, he hinted fans won’t have to wait too long for him to return, saying he’d be back in “two years”.
