Ed Sheeran debuts at No.1 on the ARIA Singles Chart with the first track from his forthcoming second album “x” (multiply, due June), as his promo tour, live appearances and Logies performance all add up to helping “Sing” enter the charts at No.1 this week.
“Sing” is also the first No.1 song on the Top 100 Singles Chart for Ed, as his previous highest effort “Lego House” reached No.2 in November 2011 (it did go to No.1 on the digital charts for a single week though) and is now his sixth Top 10 single in Australia. “Sing” becomes the 1018th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2014) and the 453rd for ARIA (1983 to 2014), plus it also becomes the 104th song to debut at No.1 in Australia; the first for this year as the last entry at the top was Redfoo with “Let’s Get Ridiculous” back in September of 2013.
It’s the first time in Australian chart history that the simple word ‘Sing’ has reached the No.1 spot, the closest previously was Guy Mitchell with “Singing the Blues” (March 1957), whilst Fox almost had it with “S-S-S-Single Bed” (August 1976). The new No.1 also becomes the 21st chart-topper for the Atlantic Label, with their last being back in July 2012 when Fun topped the charts for two weeks with “Some Nights”, and the last English act to hit the top of charts was at this time last year when Passenger was at No.1 with “Let Her Go” (from 1st April), and Ed becomes the 39th Solo Male Artist to reach the No.1 spot in Australia, and overall the 115th English Act with the 189th English (Country) Performed No.1 single here.
After three weeks at No.1, “Geronimo” for Sheppard drops down to No.2, but holding at No.3 for a second week is current tourist (and Logie performer) Jason DeRulo with “Wiggle”. A second debut within the Top 10 occurs at No.4, as Ariana Grande with Iggy Azalea enter with “Problem” (which slightly samples the Jay-Z song “99 Problems”) and this now becomes Ariana’s first Top 10 entry, as her previous best effort here was “”The Way” (HP-37, peaked April 2013) and this becomes her fifth Top 100 entry and second Top 40 effort, with the song debuting at No.1 in New Zealand this week.
Landing his thirteenth Top 10 and ninth Top 5 single this week is David Guetta with his new track “Bad”, which leaps up sixteen spots to No.5 and also gives the songs guest Showtek their first Top 10 placing at the same time. After two weeks at No.2, “Chandelier” for Sia is back down four places to No.6 and after leaping into the Top 10 last week, Rita Ora is down a couple of places to No.7 with “I Will Never Let You Down”, which achieves Gold (●) in sales, whilst Rita’s boyfriend Calvin Harris scores ▲ Platinum for “Summer” which is down four places to No.8 this week.
The fourth new Top 10 entry this week is from local rapper (overseas based though) Iggy Azalea, who leaps up eight places to No.9 with “Fancy”, making it two new Top 10 entries within the same week, as she debuts at No.4 alongside Ariana Grande with “Problem”, whilst “Fancy” also cracked the US Top 10 this week (18 to 7). Her debut album “The New Classic” is the highest new entry at No.2 this week, and from that album she also debuts at No.86 with “Black Widow” featuring Rita Ora as guest vocalist and her first chart entry “Work” (HP-88, April 2013) returns at No.97. The final track within the Top 10 this week is “High” for Peking Duk featuring Nicole Millar, down two places to No.10.
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: “My Love” for Route 94 is up a place to a new peak of No.18 and is newly certified Gold (●) in sales, whilst the former No.18 track “Up!” for Samantha Jade is back up six to No.24 this week. “Birthday” for Katy Perry jumps up nine spots to a new peak of No.25, whilst leaping twelve to No.26 is Passenger with “Hearts on Fire”. The DVD and BR release of Disney’s “Frozen” helps the album to claim the No.1 spot for the first time this week, with the lead track “Let it Go” for Idina Menzel jumping back up thirteen spots this week to No.27, and the Demi Lovato version back up forty-one places to No.45. Avicii entered at No.99 last week with his new track “Lay Me Down” featuring Adam Lambert and Nile Rodgers, with the track bulleting up sixty-five places to No.34, whilst also new to the Top 50 are Milky Chance with “Stolen Dance” (60 to 35), “Marilyn Monroe” for Pharrell Williams (53 to 40), “Turn Down for What” by DJ Snake and Lil’ Jon (58 to 43) and “Young and Beautiful” for Lana Del Rey (87 to 49) (now 4x▲ Platinum) which is being used in the just launched clips for the 2015 mini-series ‘Gallipoli’. And thanks to their current national tour (and Logies performance), MKTO climb up six places to a new peak of No.42 with their latest track “American Dream”.
DOWN DOWN: After twenty weeks within the Top 10, twelve at No.1, “Happy” for Pharrell Williams drops down five places to No.11 this week, whilst also leaving the Top 10 after a single week is Justin Timberlake with “Not a Bad Thing” (HP-10) (now Gold ●) down to No.13 and falling seven spots to No.14 is Jessica Mauboy with “Never Be the Same” (HP-6)(now ▲ Platinum) after two weeks within the Top 10. And after ten weeks within the ten “Rather Be” (HP-2×5) for Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne falls six places to No.15. Pitbull and G.R.L. are down four to No.20 this week with “Wild Wild Love” which is now ▲ Platinum in sales and after debuting at No.14 last week, “Faded” for Zhu drops seven places to No.21 this week. “Brave” for Sara Barielles falls eight to No.28, but tumbling thirteen to No.31 is David Guetta with “Shot Me Down”. Taylor Henderson falls nine to No.32 with “When You Were Mine”, and dropping ten to No.36 are The Chainsmokers with “#SELFIE” (now ▲ Platinum). Gabrielle Aplin plummets fourteen to No.38 with “The Power of Love” and Joel Fletcher is down ten to No.39 with “Loco”. “Free” for Rudimental and Emile Sande falls eleven to No.46 and “The Man” for Aloe Blacc is down fourteen to No.47. Another of last weeks high debuts, “Midnight” for Coldplay halves itself this week, as it drops twenty-five places to No.50 and leaving the Top 50 are Avicii with “Addicted to You” (45 to 54), “Swing” by Joel Fletcher and Savage (41 to 58), “Braveheart” for Neon Jungle (43 to 60), “Beating Heart” for Ellie Goulding (47 to 61), “Pittsburgh” by The Amity Affliction (39 to 63), “Stupid Love” for Jason DeRulo (46 to 66) and “West Coast” for Lana Del Rey (44 to 82).
The only other Top 50 debut this week is from Sam Smith with “Stay With Me” at No.22, whilst his other current entry “Money on My Mind” is up ten places to a new peak of No.51, both helped by his current promo tour of Australia. This becomes his third chart entry, as his first entry was as guest vocalist on the Naughty Boy track “La La La” (HP-5, peaked early August 2013).
Lower 50: Another act who was here from a promo tour this week was John Newman, who returns at No.55 with his Logie performed song “Love Me Again” (HP-4, peaked October 2013). The “Frozen” DVD and BR release also help another song from the soundtrack to climb too, with “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” (HP-45) for Kristen Bell back up fifteen places to No.59 and achieving Gold (●) in sales, whilst Lorde cracks 7x▲ Platinum for her “Love Club” (EP) (featuring ‘Royals’), which is down nine to No.73 this week. Tours for MKTO and Jason DeRulo also helps their older songs to climb, with “God Only Knows” for MKTO back up seven to No.75 and “Talk Dirty” for JDR up twenty-three to No.77. With ANZAC day falling within the chart week (Friday 25th April), the former No.1 single for Redgum “I Was only 19” (peaked 16-May-1983) returns at No.78, whilst climbing a few places to a new peak of No.81 is Alicia Keys and Kendrick Lamar with “It’s on Again”. Also scoring a new peak and returning to the Top 100 at No.93 are First Aid Kit with “My Silver Lining”, whilst the other returnees are the aforementioned Iggy Azalea with “Work” at No.97, “Team” for Lorde at No.99 and Tina Arena at 100 with “Only Lonely” (HP-32), which she sung during The Logies Memoriam segment of the show.
Scoring his first ARIA Top 100 Singles Chart entry is local rapper Allday with “Right Now” at No.69, whilst the last new entry within the lower fifty (apart from the previously mentioned Iggy and Rita Ora entry) is at No.84, Krewella with “Enjoy the Ride” becoming their third chart entry after “Live for the Night” (HP-87, Sept 2013) and “Legacy” with Nicky Romero (HP-44, February 2014).
