Elton John’s Rocket Pictures will produce and release an animated version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s second musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Rocket’s Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish are producing with John, Webber and Rice in as executive producers.
Joseph followed the duo’s first collaboration, The Likes of Us, in 1968 as a fifteen-minute cantata commissioned by the Colet Court preparatory school in London. Over subsequent stagings, Webber and Rice added more songs and a concept album was recorded in 1969.
The success of their next show, Jesus Christ Superstar, gave knew life to Joseph which saw new productions and additional recorded version in the early-70’s, ending up on the West End in 1973 followed by additional London productions in 1975 and 1978 and a Broadway run in 1982.
Over the years since, a number of touring versions of the show have emerged including productions starring David Cassidy (who had been in the Broadway show) and Donny Osmond. Popular songs from the show include Any Dream Will Do and Close Every Door.
