A bible once owned by Elvis Presley has sold for £59,000 (US$94,000) at a British auction.
The BBC reports that the bible was a Christmas gift from his uncle and aunt in 1957. It has his name embossed in gold on the front, and reportedly features annotations from the King himself.
It was sold during an auction of over 100 pieces of Presley memorabilia, which formed a quarter of a collection from a British fan and included a pair of “stained underwear”. Sadly, the undies failed to reach the £7000 reserve price.
Three rival phone bidders battled it out for the bible and the BBC quotes auctioneer Karen Fairweather that “You could hear a pin drop when it sold for that price”.
“There was a round of applause when the hammer went down,” she said, “It was incredible.”
The winning bidder – an American living in the UK – chose to remain anonymous.
