Elvis Costello has released a stunning cover of Paul Simon’s ‘American Tune’ as The Imposter for the July 4 celebrations.
Simon’s original version of ‘American Tune’ was on his third solo album ‘There Goes Rhymin’ Simon’ in 1973. The song references struggle, weariness, hard work, confusion and homesickness with the message “you can’t be blessed forever’.
In 2008 a political group in the USA used the song in support of then Senator Obama to emphasis what went wrong with America under Bush. Costello is using the song as a statement against American idiot Donald Trump.

Paul Simon would most likely approve of the Costello version. He rewrote his classic ‘Feelin’ Groovy’ as a Trump piss-take for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert in June.
