The UK had a resurgence of cassette single sales in 2012 with the Official Charts Company reporting that sales tripled in 2012, mainly thanks to the band Feeder.
The reason for the 300% increase was because the band Feeder released their song ‘Borders’ on cassette. ‘Borders’ accounted for 480 of the 604 cassette singles sold in the UK in 2012 or 78.9% of the sales.
In 2012, cassette singles sold a grand total of 604 copies in the UK. That was up from the 218 sold in 2011.
Albums fared better. 3,823 cassette albums sold in the UK during 2012. The biggest seller was Charles Aznavour – ‘She – The Best Of’.
As for other obsolete technologies, the Official Charts Company also reports that 270 albums sold on MiniDisc in the UK during 2012.
