Lady Gaga has recorded a duet with British singer Florence Welch for her upcoming album.
Lady Gaga co-hosted the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw on Friday morning to mark the premiere of new single Perfect Illusion, her first pop song since 2014. During the chat, she revealed her upcoming fifth solo album will feature a collaboration with the Florence + The Machine singer.
“There’s a feature on the album that I think you will be very excited about. Me and Florence Welch did a duet together,” she said. “I started to work on an idea for a song that I really wanted to do with a girl. You’ll see why when you see what the song is about… I just thought ‘who do I want to sing with?’ She’s really to me if not the best, one of the greatest vocalists in the world. She’s incredible.”
Perfect Illusion, her first single from the album, is about social media, how people try to create glorified version of their lives and how we must accept most things we see on the Internet “aren’t reality”.
She wrote the lyrics on a typewriter and created the song with Kevin Parker from Australian band Tame Impala and producers Mark Ronson and BloodPop. The team was so excited about the release of their “baby” they video called each other and got emotional ahead of its premiere.
“I’m just so excited,” she said. “It’s really special on a personal level too between me and Mark and BloodPop and Kevin. We were all on Facetime this morning and screaming and crying. It’s our baby.
“I got to be obsessed with music with a bunch of guys that are like my brothers… The first day I was in the studio with Mark I cried the whole day. I was so overwhelmed with excitement. It was so overwhelming to have that love all day.”
Lady Gaga was so hyped about sharing her new track she accidentally swore on live morning radio by saying “the new shit”. She apologised to listeners and told them, “I have a potty mouth.”
She also visited a couple of other London radio stations – dressed in a cropped T-shirt which showed underboob, and very small denim hotpants – meeting former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, who co-hosts Heart FM Breakfast show. Later Emma shared a video of them singing Spice Girls hit 2 Become 1 together on Instagram.
Since the release of ARTPOP in 2013, Lady Gaga has released jazz singles and an album with Tony Bennett and the title song to the documentary The Hunting Ground, Til it Happens To You, which was nominated for an Oscar. She also starred in TV series American Horror Story: Hotel, which earned her a Golden Globe for best actress in a miniseries or TV film.
