David Letterman invited the Foo Fighters to be his final musical (and final guest) overall on the last edition of Late Show With David Letterman.
Letterman specifically requested that they play Everlong from their album The Color and the Shape, a song that they played on the show while David was recovering from heart surgery fifteen years ago. The show’s productions staff put together video montage of the host over the years to show over the performance.
The retirement of Letterman could leave a hole in the late night landscape for the spotlighting of artists, both old and new. Plus, even with his sometimes larger than life persona, Paul Shaffer is a well respected member of the music community and, along with the World’s Most Dangerous Band, brought an extra bit of flair to many of the performances.
Bob Dylan, Eddie Vedder and Tom Waits also performed for Letterman’s final shows.
