Frederick “Toots” Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals was injured when a 19-year-old concert-goer hit him with a thrown bottle.
The band was playing at the Dominion Riverrock Festival in Richmond, VA when William C. Lewis, 19, threw a glass vodka bottle at the stage, striking Hibbert in the forehead and causing lacerations. Toots was taken to VCU Medical Center where he was treated and released.
Police investigated how Lewis was able to get the vodka into the crowd which was screened upon entry. It was later discovered that a bottle of vodka was missing from an outdoor bar area.
Festival manager Stephen Lecky took Hibbert to the hospital, telling the Richmond Times Dispatch, “He was in good spirits and was very appreciative of Richmond. He said he wanted to come back, and he understood this was just one bad apple, basically. He was lucid. He was laughing. He was tired obviously. He had had a very long day…. He was one of the nicest men I ever met.”
