Brooklyn singer-songwriter Garland Jeffreys has announced he will be ceasing to tour after his next set of dates but that doesn’t mean he will stop writing and recording.
In a Tweet, Garland said, “BIG NEWS: After more than 50 years of performing, I’ve decided to hang up my rock and roll shoes. I’ll keep writing songs and recording. As you can imagine, it hasn’t been an easy decision. I want to thank everyone for coming out to see me over all these years – details to follow”

The now 75-year old Garland Jeffreys went to art school at Syracuse University in the 60s with Lou Reed. By 1966 he was playing around popular Greenwich Village nightclubs like The Bitter End. He played the guitar on John Cale’s 1969 solo album, was a member of Grinder’s Switch also in 1969 but didn’t release his own album until 1973.
Garland’s biggest US chart entry was his cover of ? and the Mysterians’ ‘96 Tears’ in 1981.
Garland Jeffreys always did better in Europe than in America. He had a number one hit with ‘Matador’ in Belgium in 1979 and a number eight hit with ‘Hail Hail Rock ‘N’ Roll’ in Switzerland in 1991.
