Gladys Knight has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Living Legend Award from BET’s Black Girls Rock!.
Black Girls Rock! acknowledges the achievements of black women who have broken barriers in the areas of art, music, philanthropy and community service. Black Girls Rock! 2016 will tape on Friday, April 1 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, NJ and the broadcast will premiere on Tuesday, April 5 at 8:00 P.M. ET/PT on BET.

Shot Caller Award – Shonda Rhimes
Star Power Award – Danai Gurira
Young, Gifted & Black Award – Amandla Stenberg
Community Change Agent Award – Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza & Opal Tometi, founders of Black Lives Matter
Knight has had an astounding career starting in 1961 when Gladys Knight & the Pips’ Every Beat of My Heart went to number 1 on the R&B Singles and 6 on the Hot 100. Even though the group was relegated to secondary status at Motown, they still managed to score three top ten hits before moving to Buddah where they had four more. Gladys went on to also include acting on her resume with appearances on both TV series and on film.
