In a scene slightly reminiscent of the recent Casey Kasem controversy, the family of Glen Campbell is in dispute over his care for Alzheimer’s disease.
While things have not deteriorated into a legal battle, Campbell’s daughter from a previous marriage, Debby, has taken issue with Glen’s current wife Kim’s decision to put him into a long-term care facility due to his deteriorating condition.
Campbell was moved to the facility in April as his condition deteriorated based on the advice of doctors. The singer revealed that he was suffering from Alzheimer’s in 2011 and has, since, released two final albums and went on one last tour. It was during that tour where the extent of the disease was revealed as Glen would occasionally forget words to his hits.
In the June 23 issue of Country Weekly, Campbell’s daughter Debby, from his marriage to Diane Kirk, expressed her concern that her father was in a facility and not being treated at home. Debby regularly travels from her home in Texas to Nashville to see her father. “I think my dad deserves better than this. I’m not saying it’s bad by any means, but I don’t think he’s getting the attention that he needs. If I felt that [his family in Nashville] was spending hours with him and eating meals with him, it would be different. If I lived there, I would want to spend from the time he wakes in the morning until the evening with him . . . But why can’t I do that in the comfort of my own home with him instead of flying to Nashville and going to a care facility?”
Debby went on to say that she has contacted Campbell’s wife about taking him back to Texas but has not received a response. She says her father wants to go home.
On Thursday, Glen’s wife of 32 years sent an e-mail to the Associated Press saying that she put Glen into the facility upon doctor’s suggestions. “I am his wife and no one wants him home more than me but I must do what is in his best interest.” She said that she visits him daily and that he is receiving excellent care at the facility. He has activities and therapies to stimulate him and help him experience daily moments of success. His life is filled with love and laughter and he is being cared for round the clock by people who specialise in Alzheimer’s care and happen to adore him.”
