Gotye feat. Kimbra ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ has hit the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.
This makes Gotye the first Australian in the 21st Century to have a number one song in America. Savage Garden ‘I Knew I Loved You’ was the last to go to number one in 2000.
The only other Australians to go to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1980 are Men At Work, INXS, Rick Springfield, Olivia Newton-John, Air Supply and Savage Garden.
‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ has now sold over 5 million downloads around the world including more than 500,000 last week alone in the USA. That makes it one of only six songs that have sold over 500,000 downloads in one week.
Gotye’s ‘Making Mirrors’ album also moved up the US album chart this week and is now sitting at number 7. It has now sold more than 1 million copies around the world.
Gotye and Kimbra performed ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ last week on Saturday Night Live. The song was also recently covered on Glee and American Idol.
