Grandmaster Flash will be immortalised on Sunset Boulevard’s RockWalk.
While their instrument of choice doesn’t really match up with the namesake, Guitar Center will induct hip-hop DJs Grandmaster Flash, Grand Wizzard Theodore and Grandmixer DXT onto their RockWalk on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.
In reality, the RockWalk is to honor “those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Blues and R&B”, previously honoring such non-guitar playing artists as George Martin, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Robert Moog and Marvin Gaye.
Grandmaster Flash is already a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first hip-hop/rap artist to be so honored. He is credited with developing the backspin technique and punch phrasing.
Flash is also sometimes credited with developing scratching but, in fact, he perfected the technique that was originally developed by Grand Wizzard Theodore. His innovation has gone on to be used in almost every genre of music.
Grandmixer DXT is credited with being the artist that originally made the turntable a musical/improvisational instrument along with developing the ability to change the pitch of the sound from an LP. He may be best known as the DJ on Herbie Hancock’s track Rockit.
Dave Weiderman, chairman of the RockWalk, said “The artistry, innovation and contributions to music displayed by Grand Master Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore and Grand Mixer DXT over the course of three such lengthy and lauded careers can’t be understated. They are truly pioneers in their craft and have provided inspiration for countless musicians. This induction is a celebration of three true hip-hop legends.”
The induction ceremony will be held next Thursday, March 6, at 3 PM PST.
