Green Day is about to add one more accolade to their history. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members have been named Global Icons by MTV and will be presented with the honor at the EMAs.
Green Day are the seventh artist to be given the award, which was started in 2010, after Bon Jovi, Queen, Eminem, Whitney Houston, Ozzy Osbourne and Duran Duran.
Bruce Gillmer, executive VP of Talent and Music Programming for MTV, said “Green Day is without question, one of the worlds’ most influential rock bands. For over two decades, they’ve introduced new generations of fans from around the globe to their impassioned lyrics and raw musical power. We’re incredibly proud to have Green Day as this year’s MTV EMA Global Icon Award honoree.”
Green Day are also up for Best Live Act and Best Rock Act, an award they have already won three times. Other veteran artists up for awards include Daft Punk (Best Video for Starboy with The Weeknd), Metallica (Best Rock), the Red Hot Chili Peppers (Best Rock), Radiohead (Best Alternative) and Duran Duran (Best World Stage).
The 2016 MTV EMAs will be held in Rotterdam on November 6 at 8 PM GMT.
