Original Santana keyboard player Gregg Rolie will rejoin the group to perform at four shows in Mexico this week.
Rolie was one of the four original members of the Carlos Santana Blues Band when it formed in 1967 in San Francisco along with Santana, Marcus Malone, Rod Harper and David Brown. He was with the band through the recording of their first four albums (Santana, Abraxas, Santana III and Caravanserai) before leaving in 1971 over differences with Santana.
In 1973, he joined another former Santana member, Neal Schon, in his new band which became Journey with which he stayed until 1980. During the next decade, he recorded two solo albums along with a brief return to Santana for the album Freedom before forming The Storm in 1991. Most recently, he has spent the last three years as a member of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band.
Carlos Santana announced in 2013 that he was going to record a new album with the original members of the band, saying that he thought Rolie was on board, but the project has been put on the back burner for the band’s Corazon release.
With Rolie joining Santana for four dates, we will retain a bit of hope that the original band album may finally be getting underway.
The dates:
3/21 – Monterrey, Mexico – Arena Monterrey
3/23 – Veracruz, Mexico – Cumbre Tajin Festival: Parque Takilhsukut
3/26 – Guadalajara, Mexico – VFG Arena (with Journey)
3/27 – Mexico City, MX – Sports Palace (with Journey)
