Activision is looking to revive the genre later this year with Guitar Hero Live, their first release in five years.

The genre started in 2005 with the original Guitar Hero and new editions were released yearly up until 2010’s Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. Along with the six main editions, there were band-based games for Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen and a number of expansions.

The new version will introduce the GHTV Network, which is being called the “world’s first playable music video network”, as a way to provide even more content for the game.

The original Guitar Hero and Rock Band games were a huge boon for classic rock bands, introducing their music to younger, console game using players. Along with royalties from the use of the tracks, there was also the exposure that, at times, led to new music sales for veteran acts.

That trend continues with the new Rock Band Live as the initial list of tracks for the game includes tracks from such artists as the Rolling Stones, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, Judas Priest, Pantera and Rage Against the Machine. Also include are such current stars as Ed Sheeran, Gary Clark, Jr., the Black Keys, the Killers and Skrillex.

The initial list of tracks for Guitar Hero Live:

Gold on the Ceiling – The Black Keys
Sometimes – Blitz Kids
Sing – Ed Sheeran
My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up) – Fall Out Boy
Don’t Owe You a Thang – Gary Clark, Jr.

Ho Hey – The Lumineers
Na Na Na – My Chemical Romance
King for a Day – Pierce the Veil (feat. Kellin Quinn)

Under the Pressure – The War on Drugs
In The End – Black Veil Brides
Guerrilla Radio – Rage Against the Machine
