Artist H.R. Giger, the iconic sci-fi and fantasy artist who created the world of the Alien movie series and a number of iconic album covers including Emerson Lake & Parmer and Debbie Harry, has died from injuries of a fall at the age of 74.
Giger’s paintings, sculptures and set designs were often the things of nightmares, picturing alien landscapes and creatures that were, at times, inspired by the night terrors that he frequently suffered.
Although it was 1979’s Alien that first shot Giger to the forefront of pop culture, he had actually been a favorite of fantasy fans for years and became involved in the world of music as early as the late-60’s. In 1973, he created the cover of Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s album Brain Salad Surgery.
It was Giger’s take on the ELP initials used on this cover that would become the logo for the band for the rest of their career.
