Happy Christmas Molly. Australian’s across the country will be thinking of you on this Christmas Day.
Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum will spend Christmas today under heavy sedation but comfortable.
The condition of the 65-year old music guru is not expected to change for some days now as he is kept asleep through medication while he recovers from the operation to his shoulder and ribs this week.
Doctors at The Alfred Hospital, where Molly has been since falling from the ladder at his home 10 days ago, were pleased with the initial operations to repair Ian but are only slowly bringing him away from sedation. He will spend Christmas Day out of it.
Ian’s manager Mark Klemens said yesterday that Molly is only occasionally opening his eyes but “it’s really just a minor reaction. He is not responding to anything”.
Yesterday, Ian’s brother Brian Meldrum thanked everyone in an editorial in The Herald-Sun.

“To each and every one, we are eternally grateful,” Brian said. “When he recovers, and we’re confident he will, he will be overwhelmed by the thousands of people, both here and around the world, who have shown concern for him, who have wished him well, who want him to be around for a few more years yet”.
Brian added this advice, “I’ve been told that one of the most common accidents for men over 60 is falling from a ladder”.
“As they say, there’s no fool like an old fool”.
“Now I reckon Molly might have some advice for all us old codgers. He’d say, “Do yourself a favour, stay off the ladders.”
(Brian worked for the Herald and Weekly Times for 32 years. He is a former racing editor).
Happy Christmas Molly.
