Composer Helen Gifford OAM has been announced as the 2016 recipient of the Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award for 2016 at the APRA Art Music Awards to be handed out in Melbourne on 16 August, 2016.
At the ART Music Awards APRA’s Board of Directors nominate an individual for has made a notable contribution to Australian art music.
Between 1970 and 1982 Helen Gifford received regular commissions to write music for Melbourne Theatre Company productions. She was the composer in residence for the Australian Opera in 1974.
In 1996 Ms Gifford was awarded the Doctor of Letters by Monash University. That same year she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of her service to music as a composer.
