The Helpmann Awards, Australia’s premier awards for the live entertainment and performing arts industry, will return to Sydney in August.
The 14th Annual Helpmann Awards will be held at the iconic Capitol Theatre in Sydney. The theatre has been housing entertainment in Sydney since it opened in 1916. It has been the home of musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Mary Poppins as well as music events such as Bruce Springsteen unplugged in 1997, Kylie Minogue in 1998 and Sting in 2000.
The Helpmann Awards recognise the broad cross-section of live entertainment in Australia. “The Helpmann Awards are the pinnacle ‘night of nights’ event for our industry, recognising the very best in live performances that annually attract over 16.2 million people to shows across the country with revenues topping $1.2 billion,” Chief Executive Evelyn Richardson commented.
Foxtel will once again broadcast the awards event. “The Helpmanns extends our commitment to providing a television showcase of the best in Australian live entertainment. This annual event is an integral part of our programming calendar each year and this year’s event promises to be on a grand scale, beginning with, “The Circle Of Life” – the spectacular opening number from Disney’s “The Lion King.” Foxtel’s Brian Walsh said.
Jon Nicholls will return to the event as Executive Producer. Nicholls has worked on seven of the 14 Awards shows to date. “I am delighted to be returning as Executive Producer especially as we will be presenting the Awards on the set of The Lion King, the Helpmanns, first multi award winning production, having won six Helpmanns including ‘Best Musical,’” Jon said.
The New South Wales Government will support the event as Strategic Partner for the 2014 Helpmann Awards. “I am a real fan of our live performance culture and greatly admire the artistic brilliance and creativity celebrated through The Helpmann Awards held in Sydney, the live performance capital of Australia,” George Souris, Minister for Tourism, Major Events and The Arts said.
