Mark McEntee has put together the all-new Divinyls for LA singer songwriter Lauren Ruth Ward on vocals. Lauren nails the songs, as you can hear in the first footage featuring ‘Boys In Town’, the first song Mark and Chrissy ever wrote together.
Lauren was a former hairdresser from the US East Coast who quit her job and moved to Los Angeles for a life of rock and roll. “I was a hairstylist for seven years,” Lauren tells Noise11.com. “I was 26, wrote songs as therapy and had music as a hobby so I just needed to do it. I quit my career and started over. That was really terrifying. It’s a different world. Its life number two”.
She met Mark McEntee through songwriting legend Billy Steinberg, who co-wrote ‘I Touch Myself’, as well as Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ and Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors’. “Billy is a legend,” Lauren says. “He has worked with a bunch of people in my group of friends. My fiancé is a singer songwriter named LP. They had done things together and I got to know him through her. We talked about collaborating. I usually write within my band. My guitar player is much like Chrissy and Mark. Eduardo and I write our stuff so I didn’t know if Billy and I could work together. I sang on sessions for him when he was writing with other people. He is just a pal. He does Songwriter Rounds, where songwriters talk about what they wrote and where they performed them, he does one with Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks wife. He has asked him to come along and sing so I’ve sang ‘I Touch Myself’, ‘Like A Virgin’, True Colors’, his catalogue. He saw Chrissy in me because I’m a huge Divinyls fan. He contacted Mark and said ‘ we have to re-record I Touch Myself. It was really fun”.
Billy connected Lauren with Mark McEntee. “I got a call from Mark, he was so humble. He wanted to play these songs again. It is really exciting for me,” she said.
