Here’s why The Hollies Too Young To Be Married isn’t on their greatest hits album

In 1970 The Hollies had a number one hit in Australia and New Zealand with ‘Too Young To Be Married’ but the song never makes it to their greatest hits compilations.

Founding member Bobby Elliott explained to Noise11.com, “it should, should it!. You guys down there were very kind to us. EMI Australia spotted it and its potential. It was a number one record down there and in New Zealand. Tony Hicks wrote that, my co-member, it should be on the hits album but it wasn’t a hit in the UK so that’s maybe why it isn’t on the albums. We’ll be doing it on stage, we always do when we are in Oz.”

‘Too Young To Be Married’ was only released as a single in Australia and New Zealand.

Graham Nash was an early member of The Hollies before forming Crosby, Stills & Nash. Bobby recalls when gram started to develop as a songwriter.

“He had written a song called ‘To You My Love’ for the album ‘In The Hollies Style’,” he said. “I remember him playing it for me in number two studio at Abbey Road and I thought that sounds like a complete song. He strummed it through and we played it. That was it. It is just him singing. He went from strength to strength or writing with Allan and Tony. They then wrote ‘Carrie Anne’ and stuff like that. They were a great writing team”.

Graham was an early casualty of the band. “Then the split happened,” he said. “We were working in the States a lot. We met up with the West Coast guys like Crosby, Stills, Cass Elliott. We used to go to the Mamas and Papas recording sessions. Graham had an affinity for The States. He was spliting with his first wife Rose. Everything just started to shake. He met Joni Mitchell and then he left is on December 8, 1968. That’s when he left the band, on my birthday”.

Graham has rejoined The Hollies from time to time. “He’s been back a few times,” Bobby said. “I was with him a couple of months ago. He was playing in Manchester and I went to see him there. He is fine, he has a new wife now. He had his band on stage. His chatter went over well. I went backstage and then we had a night out. I love Graham”.

In 1983 he was back in the studio with The Hollies for ‘What Goes Around’. “We made it in LA. Graham owned the studio there,” he said. “We spent a lot of time there. We stayed at the Sunset Marquee, drinking champagne. We had a great time there”.

The album has been out of print for decades and is not available on streaming services. “I don’t know. I don’t own record companies. It’s all a bit disjointed,” Bobby said. “We put a lot into that record and there’s some good songs on there. We had a lot of fun making it”.
