Hester Fraser, the granddaughter of former Australian Prime Minister, the late Malcolm Fraser, has recorded ‘The Camellia Tree’, a song for asylum seekers with all proceeds going to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Hester wrote the song as a tribute to her late grandfather and performed the song at his funeral on Match 27, 2015.
‘The Camellia Tree’ will be officially released on August 1 under Hester’s professional stage name Goldheist.
While Malcolm Fraser’s politics at the time were questionable, after leaving government he went on to become one of Australia’s greatest human rights advocates. “He was a global man, and, to me, it made sense to communicate my very personal experience of him, both as my grandfather and as one of Australia’s strongest voices for disenfranchised people around the world, through music – the most universal language of all,” Hester said in a statement.
The Fraser family has chosen the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre as the beneficiary of the sales to continue Malcolm Fraser’s commitment to the goals and principles of the ASRC.
The video for ‘The Camellia Tree was filmed at Glebe Justice Centre and produced by Grad Illusions.
The Camellia Tree – currently available for pre-order – will be released on Saturday 1 August for digital download via platforms such as iTunes and GooglePlay.
