David Bowie fans waiting for the brand new 2018 version of ‘Never Let Me Down’ should hunt down the earliest release from the album.
A newer version of ‘Time Will Crawl’, remade by Mario McNulty, was actually released in 2008 for the compilation ‘iSelect’. The release was only for the United Kingdom and Ireland and eventually made its way to the USA for release.
For the rest of the world the version known as ‘MM mix’ of ‘Time Will Crawl’ was released as part of the more recent ‘Nothing Has Changed’ compilation but only on the 3CD version of that release, not the 1CD and 2CD editions.
The original edition of ‘Never Let Me Down’ was produced by Bowie and David Richards and released in 1987. Richards had previously worked with Iggy Pop on ‘Blah-Blah-Blah’ and Queen on ‘A Kind of Magic’.
Bowie toured to support the album. That tour was known as the Glass Spider tour. While the album sold reasonably well, it is considered one of his weaker releases by fans.
Bowie was never happy with the final result of ‘Never Let me Down’ and when the time came for the ‘iSelect’ compilation did not want to include the original version of ‘Time Will Crawl’. Instead he summonsed producer Mario McNulty to reimagine the track. Bowie liked what McNulty did so much that he wanted to redo the entire album. In January 2018, McNulty gathered Reeves Gabrels, David Torn, Sterling Campbell, Tim Lefebvre, Nico Muhly and Laurie Anderson to complete Bowie’s wishes. The track ‘Zeroes’ was released in July 2018 but fans can also search for the previously released ‘Time Will Crawl’ as a second taste of what is to come.
McNulty recreated ‘Never Let Me Down 2018’ at New York’s Electric Lady Studios. The original album was recorded at Mountain Studios in Switzerland and Power Station studios in Manhattan.
