Gil Matthews’ Aztec Records has released a piece of Australian rock history with ‘Lobby’s Last… Summer Jam’ from Australian guitar legend, the late Lobby Loyde.
‘Lobby’s Last… Summer Jam’ is in two parts.
Part One is the Lobby Loyde’s Coloured Balls concert from the second Sunbury in 1973 recorded at 3:30am in January, 1973. Loyde was joined by Billy Thorpe and Leo De Castro for the opening track ‘Help Me’.
The original ‘Summer Jam’ record, featuring these recordings, was released in November 1973. For the first time, the additional track Johnny B. Goode is included.
Part Two is the never before released final Lobby Loyde recordings.
The six tracks from ‘Lobby’s Last’ were recorded in the 90s with Barney G (rhythm, lead, slide guitar), Karlis Miglans (vocal, rhythm guitar), Alan Johnson (bass), Danny Simcic (drums), Simon Smith (drums).
‘Lobby’s Last’ features the most incredible 14 minute version of Lobby’s version of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’.
Barney G explains in the liner notes, “Lobby wanted to record a cover which was the John Lennon song ‘Working Class Hero’ and I said ‘hey look, rather than just record the thing, why not record a great big symphonic version, sort of do it as a magnum opus’. So Lobby said, ‘well, sounds like a good idea’. So we recorded our version of ‘Working Class Hero’.
