How Jesus Christ Superstar gave birth to Air Supply and Divinyls

by Paul Cashmere on December 26, 2018

in News

Divinyls came out of Air Supply and Air Supply came out of Jesus Christ Superstar. It is incredible that that one theatre production of 1975 generated two of Australia’s biggest international acts of the 70s and 80s.

Russell Hitchcock, Graham Russell, Mark McEntee and Jeremy Paul all worked on the ’75 production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

McEntee left before the second album ‘The Whole Thing’s Started’ and Paul was out by the time the third album ‘Life Support’ rolled around. That was the one with ‘Lost In Love’.

Jeremy Paul went on to the unsuccessful Batonrouge. That band’s singer was Chrissy Amphlett. McEntee came to one of their gigs at Collaroy which was where he first met Chrissy. They all met up soon after at the Sydney Opera House, brought in Bjarne Ohlin and Richard Harvey and the first Divinyls line-up was formed.

Jeremy Paul left Divinyls soon after the first EP. Mark McEntee recently told Noise11 that he and Amphlett had a falling out.

Now 39 years after Divinyls formed and 42 years after Air Supply formed both bands will tour Australia again in 2019.

Air Supply will tour Australia for David Roy Williams
