The classic Humble Pie live album, Performance: Rockin’ the Fillmore, is being fleshed out with the new The Complete Recordings, giving fans all four complete shows from May 28 and 29, 1971. The 4-CD set will be released on October 29 via Omnivore.
Performance was Humble Pie’s breakthrough in the U.S. after four previous studio albums. The album only contained one original song by the group (Stone Cold Fever) along with six covers by the likes of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Ashford and Simpson and Ray Charles. It made it to number 21 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums, setting the band up for two top twenty studio albums (Smokin’ (1972 / #6) and Eat It (1973 / #13).
The four shows were all recorded at the Fillmore East, unedited and in their original sequence.
Drummer Jerry Shirley said of the new mastering of the shows “My God, it just took my breath away. You feel like you’re sitting in the Fillmore East, five or six rows back. In the quiet bits, you could hear a pin drop, and in the loud bits, you can almost feel the room shaking. And all four shows caught Steve at the absolute zenith of his powers. It’s astonishing. I’m only sorry that he, Greg, and Dee aren’t around to enjoy it with the rest of us.”
The set was produced by Peter Frampton and Shirley. Included are detailed liner notes by Tim Cohan.
The lineup for Humble Pie for the shows:
