Ian Kenny, lead singer for both Karnivool and Birds of Tokyo, has become the first person ever to debut at number one in two different bands in the same year on the Australian chart.
Karnivool’s third album ‘Asymmetry’ is set to take over the top of the ARIA chart today, based on figures from the major retail chains and the albums position on the iTunes chart this week.
In debuting at number one with ‘Asymmetry’ Ian Kenny is also looking to outselling himself as the Karnivool album is expected to have a higher first week sales figure than the Birds of Tokyo ‘March Fires’ album.
Ian has been juggling two success bands for over six years now. “It’s not easy,” he tells Noise11.com. “It’s as fairly calculated as we can get it between the two bands. It’s actually worked quite well for the last six or seven years. So, so far so good”.
Kenny formed Karnivool in Perth in 1997. Their first release was the independent EP ‘Persona’ in 2001. The first Karnivool album was ‘Thermata’ in 2005.
Birds of Tokyo also initially started out as an indie band forming in Perth in 2004. The first release was the ‘Birds of Tokyo’ EP in 2005. The first album was ‘Day One’ in 2007.
