Ice Cube will never grin and bear racism.
The American rapper made a name for himself in group N.W.A. during the 80s with fellow hip hop stars Dr. Dre and Eazy-E. A new movie based on their story, Straight Outta Compton, has been released and has already received rave reviews.
The group were known for being political, and Ice explains that in his eyes the world hasn’t changed that much in the last 30 years.
“It’s all the same thing, man. People don’t understand that songs like ‘F**k tha Police’ are 400 years in the making. It’s a constant racism that affects black people in this country that’s never stopped,” he vented to American GQ. “What’s crazy is that the people who inflict the pain don’t expect you to scream, don’t expect you to holler, don’t expect you to say that it hurts, don’t expect you to say, ‘Leave me alone!’ don’t expect protests. They expect you to just grin and bear it. Hell no. Hell no.”
In the movie, Ice is played by his 24-year-old son O’Shea Jackson, Jr., with the 46-year-old describing the film as “magical” because the actors were so authentic.
Ice is a Hollywood regular and has films like Ride Along, 21 Jump Street and Barber Shop under his belt. Work continues to flow in for the star, but he thinks the movie industry still has a long way to go embracing diversity.
“There’ll always be more white stories told than black stories. Hollywood was already established before we came. So we really gotta just try to get to the smart people who want to use this industry to highlight, celebrate, and magnify the human experience. Not just what white people go through. Hollywood’s got a lot of work to do to tell the human story,” he said.
